J. Chapter Guide — Review at a Glance

Purpose: one block per chapter, three to five lines each, so the entire book is reviewable in fifteen minutes. Use it to catch drift, flag scenes for rewrite, or orient a collaborator before they open a chapter file. Keep it honest — if a chapter has a problem, note it here before you need to remember it later.

Legend:

Canonical numbering (52 chapters + prologue + epilogue): this guide uses the final numbering per C2. Current on-disk filenames still use the pre-expansion scheme with letter-suffixed insertions (22a, 22b, …); the final rename is scheduled after the draft pass completes. The File column shows the filename on disk today.

Prologue

🟢 Prologue — The Station

File: 00_prologue.md · POV: Detective A quiet morning at a Spanish National Police station. A confident woman arrives with a lawyer and a stack of pre-drafted complaints. The detective, bored, helps her file them. She leaves. He reads a name off the last document: Maribel Matos Mendoza. He has no idea who she is yet. The prologue is load-bearing twice — first as a flash-forward hook, later (Ch. 35) when the reader watches this same filing from the other side of the desk in chronological time.

BOOK ONE — The Setup (Ch. 1–8)

🟢 Ch. 1 — Jon

File: 01_jon.md · POV: Jon Jon returns from a decade in China and Hong Kong. The family supply chain has survived the Great Recession but barely; the building is still there, the people mostly are. His father calls. Come to dinner. I want you to meet someone.

🟢 Ch. 2 — Jesus

File: 02_jesus.md · POV: Jon Father and son on the airstrip and in the car. The blurred edges of Jesus's way of doing business — the strip-club memory (rendered short and spicy), the customer dinners, the things Jon has never asked about. Jesus, in the car on the way home: There is a girl I want you to meet.

The favela-chair speech her father gave her at twelve, rendered in her recollection. Jesus slides his card across the bar. My son's birthday is Saturday.

File: 04_the_birthday.md · POV: Jon Jon hosts. The Madrid flat, the cousin, the mini-wars crowd. Abraham and Pecas fly in from London; Pecas is Galician by origin and quietly at home in a way nobody else at the party is. The buzzer at Jon's flat: Maribel with one overnight bag.

BOOK TWO — The Complication (Ch. 9–26)

🟢 Ch. 9 — The Errand

File: 12_the_office.md · POV: Jon Building out the makerspace. Laser cutters, 3D printers, the Erasmus cohort, the first skeletal biped prototype in a harness. A junior employee, unprompted: Maribel said to ask you, not her.

File: 13_the_fire.md · POV: Jon Cutter left on overnight. Firefighters, the street closed, Jesus on the phone from bed. Jesus: You need to find somewhere else.

🟢 Ch. 14 — The Gym

File: 14_the_gym.md · POV: Maribel The rough gym. Bouncers as sparring partners. Weight drops. The first serious sparring match she wins. She looks at her face in the locker-room mirror and does not recognize it. She likes it.

🟢 Ch. 15 — The Press

File: 15_the_press.md · POV: Maribel Awards circuit. An older wealthy man who was Jesus's friend for thirty years kisses her hand a little too long. She files it. She sends a clipping home to her sisters with no note.

🟢 Ch. 16 — The Re-Org

File: 16_the_reorg.md · POV: Jon (with Abraham in-scene) Abraham in London, the ERE, twelve thousand people, the severance equation. He stays to rescue his team. He does not call Jon. Pecas, over dinner: You are about to do something stupid, aren't you.

🟢 Ch. 17 — The Fish Farm

File: 17_the_fish_farm.md · POV: Jon (Pecas sub-scene) Stuart's clandestine fish farm discovered inside the canning factory — Pecas's set piece, heard via Abraham at a restaurant. Thematic counter-scene: this is what a company looks like when the systems work. Abraham, picking up the bill: You should come see me in London.

🟢 Ch. 18 — The Inversion

File: 18_the_inversion.md · POV: Jon → Maribel The kitchen-table restructuring. Female-majority-shareholder clause. Jon signs. Post-change: Maribel 51%, Jon 49%. POV shifts at the bottom of the chapter. In bed that night, Maribel opens a notebook and writes a list.

🟢 Ch. 19 — The Nave

File: 20_angel.md · POV: Jon Ángel and Pablino on the seventh floor of a converted-bank building. The 22-page term sheet. Jon catches the voting-trust clause on page fifteen. He does not sign that day. He calls Rafa in Hong Kong.

⚪ Ch. 21 — The Machine (to draft)

🟢 Ch. 26 — The Lawyer (renumber from old 22)

File: 22_the_lawyer.md · POV: Jon Jon arrives at the mezzanine at 9:20 pm with Ángel's folder. JB is at Maribel's desk. The stack on the desk is not Ángel's — it is a shareholders' agreement Maribel has commissioned herself. Jon reads both documents in parallel. "Señor, we are sitting down."

BOOK THREE — The Reckoning (Ch. 27–51)

🟢 Ch. 27 — Mega Group

File: 22a_mega_group.md · POV: Jon Vienna. Jon and Maribel present as married when they are divorced. Maribel walks the ask to the ceiling; Jörg closes the meeting in his head. Jon flies back alone a week later. Café Landtmann. Jörg offers $10M on a six-month delivery covenant. Maribel's new small smile on the doorstep.

🟢 Ch. 28 — The Midnight Contract

Jon and Abraham sign because insolvency is eleven days away. File (planned): 22g_the_resignation.md · POV: Abraham → Jon Abraham's Friday-at-noon email copies every shareholder on two years of misrepresentation. Credentials held pending payment; notary deposit. Partners' emergency call that weekend discovers both the contract traps and the divorce. The engineering team video-calls Abraham and applauds.

⚪ Ch. 39 — The Junta (to draft)

File (planned): 22o_the_eviction.md · POV: Abraham (WhatsApp-inflected) Guardia Civil enters the nave. "You have no power here." The WhatsApp chorus — the third of the novel's four on-page WhatsApp beats — rendered as a hybrid chapter. Maribel removed from the premises. Rubiales scratches JB's car in the car park.

🟡 Ch. 42 — The Screenshot (review, was old Ch. 25)

File (current): 25_the_screenshot.md · POV: Jon (with Lourdes) Lourdes shows Jon the staff-chat screenshot of the router sticker. Jon reads the password aloud without meaning to. Needs: retune so the chapter understands its payoff has moved — the password-as-exhibit now lands in Ch. 43 and Ch. 48, and this scene is the last "private" on-page appearance before court.

⚪ Ch. 42a — The Wings (optional, to draft)

File (planned): 22p_the_wings.md · POV: Jon International trade event. Spicy-wings eating competition. Maribel confronts Jon in front of a client: ¡ME HAS ROBADO LA EMPRESA! Short chapter. The line is the whole chapter.

⚪ Ch. 43 — The Arrest (to draft) ★

File (planned): 22q_the_arrest.md · POV: Abraham Pulled at Barajas passport control on the way home. Handcuffs through the concourse. Lost officers. Estrella Damn plastic beach chairs. The furious judge who has spent two years trying to ask five questions. Released same day. A building burned in the city while I was at the VIP drinking free cocktails. Dark-comic + pedagogical set piece — the book's teaching scene on Spanish VioGen procedure. Parallel: the court reads the password aloud and rules for the partners — "a lo mejor os lleváis una sorpresa."

🟡 Ch. 45 — La Loca del Cono (review, was old Ch. 26) ★

File (current): 26_la_loca_del_cono.md · POV: Jon → Maribel Maribel on the nave's loading ramp reads the password aloud — unhurriedly, spelling the ñ — and takes the name. Canon shift: this now lands AFTER the war, not during. The speech is the declaration over the rubble, not the opening salvo. Content largely survives; the placement in the act needs re-framing at the top of the chapter.

🟡 Ch. 46 — Father and Son (renumber, was old Ch. 27)

File (current): 27_father_and_son.md · POV: Jon Jon flies up to Galicia. The plane is an echo of Ch. 5. Jesus confesses what he has been carrying. Son, I brought her to you. Keep; light pass only.

File (current): 28_the_boardroom.md · POV: Jon The formal shareholder meeting. Maribel removed as administrator (ratifying what the court imposed in Ch. 43). Abraham's written message read into the minutes: I should have answered your call. I'm sorry. Keep; small pass for canon alignment.

🟢 Epilogue — The Folder

File: epilogue_the_folder.md · POV: Detective A year later. The detective closes Jon's file. Pending, low priority. He puts the folder in the drawer. He closes the drawer.

Coda

🟡 Ch. 52 — La Botinera (renumber, was old Ch. 32)

File: 32_la_botinera.md · POV: Jon Several years on. Jon opens a WhatsApp forward. Maribel has married Gareth, a non-league English striker past his prime. Wedding, house, bills, a pregnancy announced at the dinner where he began to talk about leaving, bricklaying, a door closing. Jon sets the phone down. One normal-voice sentence. The book ends. Keep; no revision needed.
