J. Chapter Guide β Review at a Glance
Purpose: one block per chapter, three to five lines each, so the entire book is reviewable in fifteen minutes. Use it to catch drift, flag scenes for rewrite, or orient a collaborator before they open a chapter file. Keep it honest β if a chapter has a problem, note it here before you need to remember it later.
Legend:
- π’ ON DISK β drafted in
deliverables/manuscript/, ingested, in the PDF. - π‘ TO REVISE β on disk, needs a pass now that canon has shifted (e.g., the speech moves to Ch. 45 and lands after the legal war).
- βͺ TO DRAFT β planned in
C2_chapter_map_expansion.md, not yet written.
Canonical numbering (52 chapters + prologue + epilogue): this guide uses the final numbering per C2. Current on-disk filenames still use the pre-expansion scheme with letter-suffixed insertions (22a, 22b, β¦); the final rename is scheduled after the draft pass completes. The File column shows the filename on disk today.
Prologue
π’ Prologue β The Station
File: 00_prologue.md Β· POV: Detective
A quiet morning at a Spanish National Police station. A confident woman arrives with a lawyer and a stack of pre-drafted complaints. The detective, bored, helps her file them. She leaves. He reads a name off the last document: Maribel Matos Mendoza. He has no idea who she is yet. The prologue is load-bearing twice β first as a flash-forward hook, later (Ch. 35) when the reader watches this same filing from the other side of the desk in chronological time.
BOOK ONE β The Setup (Ch. 1β8)
π’ Ch. 1 β Jon
File: 01_jon.md Β· POV: Jon
Jon returns from a decade in China and Hong Kong. The family supply chain has survived the Great Recession but barely; the building is still there, the people mostly are. His father calls. Come to dinner. I want you to meet someone.
π’ Ch. 2 β Jesus
File: 02_jesus.md Β· POV: Jon
Father and son on the airstrip and in the car. The blurred edges of Jesus's way of doing business β the strip-club memory (rendered short and spicy), the customer dinners, the things Jon has never asked about. Jesus, in the car on the way home: There is a girl I want you to meet.
π’ Ch. 3 β The Barmaid
File: 03_the_barmaid.md Β· POV: Maribel
Maribel's version of the last two years: the falsified visa, three bar jobs, the industrial dive where Jesus walks in. The favela-chair speech her father gave her at twelve, rendered in her recollection. Jesus slides his card across the bar. My son's birthday is Saturday.
π’ Ch. 4 β The Birthday
File: 04_the_birthday.md Β· POV: Jon
Jon hosts. The Madrid flat, the cousin, the mini-wars crowd. Abraham and Pecas fly in from London; Pecas is Galician by origin and quietly at home in a way nobody else at the party is. The buzzer at Jon's flat: Maribel with one overnight bag.
π’ Ch. 5 β The Flight
File: 05_the_flight.md Β· POV: Jon
Jesus's four-seater. Jon at the controls on the hop to Galicia. Surface-level conversation with Maribel all the way up; a one-second nose-drop to see what she does. She doesn't flinch. He files it. They land; Jesus is already on the terrace.
π’ Ch. 6 β Queimada
File: 06_queimada.md Β· POV: Jon
The party. The near-crash joy-ride. Pecas reciting the queimada incantation in Galician β one of the novel's atmospheric gifts, kept in full. Maribel, at Jon's ear: Let's go somewhere more interesting.
π’ Ch. 7 β The Mirror
File: 07_the_mirror.md Β· POV: Jon
Dawn. Sex implied in a sentence. Jon in the bathroom mirror: I am too old for this pace. Downstairs, Maribel is already drinking black coffee. Your father said you import things from China?
π’ Ch. 8 β The Invitation
File: 08_the_invitation.md Β· POV: Jon β Maribel
The bar boss fires Maribel and refuses her final wages. Security walks her out. That night she calls Jon and arrives with one suitcase. Mid-chapter POV shift to her watching him sleep. She makes her private promise: Never again.

π’ Ch. 9 β The Errand
File: 09_the_errand.md Β· POV: Maribel

π’ Ch. 15 β The Press
File: 15_the_press.md Β· POV: Maribel
Awards circuit. An older wealthy man who was Jesus's friend for thirty years kisses her hand a little too long. She files it. She sends a clipping home to her sisters with no note.
π’ Ch. 16 β The Re-Org
File: 16_the_reorg.md Β· POV: Jon (with Abraham in-scene)

File (planned): 20b_the_presentation.md Β· POV: Maribel β Jon

π’ Ch. 26 β The Lawyer (renumber from old 22)
File: 22_the_lawyer.md Β· POV: Jon
Jon arrives at the mezzanine at 9:20 pm with Γngel's folder. JB is at Maribel's desk. The stack on the desk is not Γngel's β it is a shareholders' agreement Maribel has commissioned herself. Jon reads both documents in parallel. "SeΓ±or, we are sitting down."

File (planned): 22h_sunday.md Β· POV: Maribel
Scheduled server maintenance reads as sabotage. Maribel rips cables out of the nave by hand. Varela drives to her. They spend the afternoon writing the Rubiales playbook into a filable document. That night they walk into the police station. The pivot scene of the book.

π‘ Ch. 40a / audit absorption
File (current): 24_the_audit.md Β· POV: Jon
Cris walks Jon through the LED-panel invoices from the Asia-era overlap. Needs a small rewrite to sit inside the siege and to hand off to Ch. 40/41 rather than stand alone. Tone stays clinical.
βͺ Ch. 41 β The Eviction (to draft) β
File (planned): 22o_the_eviction.md Β· POV: Abraham (WhatsApp-inflected)
Guardia Civil enters the nave. "You have no power here." The WhatsApp chorus β the third of the novel's four on-page WhatsApp beats β rendered as a hybrid chapter. Maribel removed from the premises. Rubiales scratches JB's car in the car park.
π‘ Ch. 42 β The Screenshot (review, was old Ch. 25)
File (current): 25_the_screenshot.md Β· POV: Jon (with Lourdes)

Pulled at Barajas passport control on the way home. Handcuffs through the concourse. Lost officers. Estrella Damn plastic beach chairs. The furious judge who has spent two years trying to ask five questions. Released same day. A building burned in the city while I was at the VIP drinking free cocktails. Dark-comic + pedagogical set piece β the book's teaching scene on Spanish VioGen procedure. Parallel: the court reads the password aloud and rules for the partners β "a lo mejor os llevΓ‘is una sorpresa."
βͺ Ch. 44 β The Visit (optional, to draft)
File (planned): 22r_the_visit.md Β· POV: ensemble
Court officer at Abraham's mother's door; later at his brother's. BΓΊsqueda y captura threat performed on the doorstep. Abraham drunk-dialing Pecas from a Guardia Civil station where a friend has him in a plastic chair with a beer. Rubiales leaves Maribel the same week.
π‘ Ch. 45 β La Loca del Cono (review, was old Ch. 26) β
File (current): 26_la_loca_del_cono.md Β· POV: Jon β Maribel
Maribel on the nave's loading ramp reads the password aloud β unhurriedly, spelling the Γ± β and takes the name. Canon shift: this now lands AFTER the war, not during. The speech is the declaration over the rubble, not the opening salvo. Content largely survives; the placement in the act needs re-framing at the top of the chapter.
π‘ Ch. 46 β Father and Son (renumber, was old Ch. 27)
File (current): 27_father_and_son.md Β· POV: Jon
Jon flies up to Galicia. The plane is an echo of Ch. 5. Jesus confesses what he has been carrying. Son, I brought her to you. Keep; light pass only.

File (current): 28_the_boardroom.md Β· POV: Jon
The formal shareholder meeting. Maribel removed as administrator (ratifying what the court imposed in Ch. 43). Abraham's written message read into the minutes: I should have answered your call. I'm sorry. Keep; small pass for canon alignment.
π‘ Ch. 48 β The Station (renumber, was old Ch. 29)
File (current): 29_the_station.md Β· POV: Jon + Detective
Mirror of the prologue. "Do you know the phrase 'La Loca del CoΓ±o 123'?" Jon says it aloud. The detective writes it down. Keep.
π‘ Ch. 49 β The Floor (renumber, was old Ch. 30)
File (current): 30_the_floor.md Β· POV: Maribel
Alone in the nave she no longer owns, she walks the floor. No triumph. She opens the laptop and starts a list. Keep.
π‘ Ch. 50 β The Call (renumber, was old Ch. 31)
File (current): 31_the_call.md Β· POV: Jon
Jon on a bench outside the station. Nando sits next to him. Jon dials Abraham. What do you actually want to do? We don't hear the answer. Keep; this chapter was already quietly perfect.
βͺ Ch. 51 β Second Chance (to draft)
File (planned): 31a_second_chance.md Β· POV: Jon
Maribel calls. Tells him she has been thinking. Asks if there is a way back. The reader watches him listen. He does not answer on the page.
Epilogue
π’ Epilogue β The Folder
File: epilogue_the_folder.md Β· POV: Detective
A year later. The detective closes Jon's file. Pending, low priority. He puts the folder in the drawer. He closes the drawer.
Coda
π‘ Ch. 52 β La Botinera (renumber, was old Ch. 32)
File: 32_la_botinera.md Β· POV: Jon
Several years on. Jon opens a WhatsApp forward. Maribel has married Gareth, a non-league English striker past his prime. Wedding, house, bills, a pregnancy announced at the dinner where he began to talk about leaving, bricklaying, a door closing. Jon sets the phone down. One normal-voice sentence. The book ends. Keep; no revision needed.
β chapters β the book's load-bearing beats
The four chapters that most need to land are marked β :
- Ch. 34 β Sunday. The moment the legal arc becomes a weapon.
- Ch. 41 β The Eviction. The physical collapse of Maribel's control, performed on-page with the WhatsApp chorus.
- Ch. 43 β The Arrest. The book's pedagogical set piece. Dark-comic and procedural at once.
- Ch. 45 β La Loca del Cono. The title chapter. The declaration over the rubble.
If these four do not work, the book does not work. Draft them with care; revise them in short passes rather than long ones.
How this guide relates to the other deliverables
- A/B for premise, spine, and thesis.
- C for the original 32-chapter compressed spine (authoritative only for Prologue + Act I + early Act II now).
- C2 for the 52-chapter expanded spine and the canon conflicts it resolved.
- D for character sheets.
- E for canon facts, cap table, timeline, and dramatic thesis.
- F for rewrite rules β including Β§ 9 on the legal-war tone (dark-comic + pedagogical).
